David Beckham acts like James Bond & VCCP hire David Brent

Published by

David Beckham; retired international football hero, noted philanthropist and unofficial UK ambassador, has collaborated with filmmaker Guy Ritchie in a new ad for his Haig Club Scotch Whisky, a venture he can add to his already enviable marketing empire, which also includes fragrances and underwear. The Haig Club brand was launched as a partnership between Diageo, Beckham himself and media mogul Simon Fuller, with the spot developed by Adam & Eve/DDB and shot by the “Snatch” director at a Scottish castle. This is not the first time Ritchie has shot with Beckham, the two also collaborated on a H&M ad last year.

Beckham said that “Working with Guy to bring this tradition to life in a new way has been so rewarding.” The spot is based around the classic tradition of the toast, a tradition which Beckham loves and “Always does with friends and family.” The spot features Beckham and an assortment of impossibly beautiful friends enjoying the whisky in a variety of exotic locations. The ad seems to suggest this is a whisky that hopes to stand toe-to-toe with premium scotch brands, not you're run-of-the-mill Glenfiddich or Johnnie Walker Red Label brands. The whisky was launched earlier this month at a swanky party on the outskirts of Edinburgh, which was attended by(of course) his wife, Professor Jimmy Choo, Victoria & Gordon and Tana Ramsay, amongst others.

In almost completely unrelated (but no less bonkers) news; a recent Sussex University graduate recently scored a trial at VCCP after submitting a film in which he interviews himself in the style of David Brent, the bumbling office manager played by Ricky Gervais in The Office. In the video, he posits himself as the perfect employee and lists his achievements in an incredibly narcissistic manner, which comes across so well because you can tell he's not being serious. He created the film because he was struggling to stand out and catch employers attention and after the video had achieved more than 11,000 views on YouTube he received offers from 20 companies! He also set up his own Recruit Will website.

Recruit Will”

Whilst the 21 year old Will Bower first thought the idea of using comedy to net a job was a little risk, he decided to go through with it after reading an article in which VCCP chief executive Michael Sugden said he respected bravery in his employees. It appears the video reached out to its intended target. Sugden said that what he likes about Bower is simply “That he got off his arse,” and he believes that “People like him deserve a chance.” He added that they get so many approaches from University graduates, but very few stand out. Bower, however, who earned a 2:1 in business and management studies, is obviously the rare exception. This wasn't his first foray into video comedy though, as he had already been making similar films on YouTube for years, even starting a business at University creating promotional films for clients.

Benjamin Hiorns is a freelance writer and musician from Kidderminster in the UK who is genuinely shocked that David Beckham drinks whisky. He always struck me as more of a WKD man.
